Outsiders #39

Writer: Judd Winick
DC Comics, $2.99
Silver and Grey, Part Three: Since You’re Here, Why Don’t You Stay Awhile?

Monsieur Mallah and the Brain are discussing Mallah’s theory that if God were a dancer, he would be a tap dancer. They arrive at the holding cell where Grace, Thunder, Metamorpho, Captain Boomerang, and Nightwing are being held prisoner.
Three hours ago, the Outsiders broke into Mallah and the Brain’s hideout. They were attacked by five metahumans, and defeated. Grace recognized one of them as Plastic Man.

In the present, Mallah is examining the captives’ DNA. He calls Nightwing’s DNA a disappointment, as it reveals that he is merely human. They say that Metamorpho’s DNA, which they’ve had on file for years, is a mess. Mallah was surprised by the fact that Boomerang has the metahuman gene running through him. Monsieur Mallah tells Thunder that, after running a cross check of her DNA and her father, Black Lightning’s, they have discovered that Black Lightning is not her father. Mallah then reveals that he was just kidding. Mallah arrives at Grace’s DNA; he tells her that they have been trying to manipulate the genetic matter of her people for years, but it’s always a dead end. Mallah realizes that the rest of the Outsiders don’t know Grace’s secret (who “her people” are), and doesn’t reveal it. Mallah goes to his computer to search for Katana, the only non-captured Outsider.

Katana is in the facility’s reactor core, skillfully avoiding cameras and motion detectors. She hopes that she doesn’t get cancer from the radiation exposure. Katana hears something, and turns around. She sees a ghostly image of Metamorhpo, who explains that he is only a part of Metamorpho that has escaped. Katana recognizes that part as Shift.
