'Messiah Complex' pt.1

The X-Men are flying in the Blackbird at top speed over Alaska. Emma Frost can't sense anyone at the location they're flying to, prompting Angel to voice all their fears: its a trap. The point is moot as they fly in as they witness an entire town on fire. Cyclops sends Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Angel in to investigate, while he and Emma stay and land the plane.

A few hours earlier, at the Xavier Institute, Professor Xavier and Beast are using Cerebra to check up on the ever-dwindling mutant population. Suddenly, Cerebra overloads as it detects a strong new mutant signature in Alaska. The overload is felt all over the complex. As the Professor realizes the importance of what Cerebra discovered, he assembles the X-Men to investigate.

Back in the present, in Cooperstown, Alaska, the X-Men are gathering survivors and surveying the devastation. They come upon two dead Marauders, Blockbuster and Prism. They also find six dead Purifiers, members of a human religious cult bent on "purifying" the earth by eliminating the mutant race.

After they realize that all of the children of Cooperstown are gone, Emma probes a female survivor's mind to find out what happened. She recalls a squad of Purifiers setting the town on fire and killing all the children. They head south a few blocks as the Marauders arrive right behind them, apparently searching for the same thing. They head towards the hospital as it explodes.

Emma snaps out of the memory and asks Angel to search for the hospital. She tells Angel that the new signature wasn't a teenage manifestation, but a mutant birth. From the hospital birth records they find that three babies were born there last night, but one is missing. They leave Cooperstown knowing that one of two very dangerous groups has the first mutant birth in years.

In the distance, Predator X, a beast bred to hunt and feed on mutants, is also hunting the mutant baby.
